The Introduction
I never feel old until I realize just how long I've REALLY been doing GrayHaven. And I leave it to annual events like this one to beat me over the head with it. But while year in review lists do nothing but cause friction over what was left out (and in some cases, what was selected), the Griffin Awards rise above it all due to the unique way the nominees and eventual winners are selected. These awards are given by both the fans and the staff of GrayHaven, with all votes being equal, resulting in what is usually a pretty interesting list. This years' nominees (selected from comics that shipped between May 2001 and May 2002) were among the most varied that we've had yet and it always makes observing the voting process that much more fun. This year saw us receive a record number of votes from both the online and retail population, beating last years' record by almost 20%. Many of the categories were determined by a small margin, proving again that your vote counts. I had originally intended this presentation to be full of bells and whistles complete with a host, guest presenters and a few other oddities for an online announcement, but the best laid plans... However, with over a decade past since we first began awarding these comic professionals for their work, it looks like next year will see the Griffins being given away during one of the major conventions next summer. More on that at a later time because this is why you clicked.... - Andrew Goletz, Editor
