"INTRODUCTION"
Welcome to "Makulu's Musings." What, you may ask, is a "Makulu?" "Makulu" is the Aboriginal word for "Tall One." To save some time, it goes something like this:
Yes I am. 6'1". Yes I did. Yes I do. Yes, I am tall. How tall? 6'1." Yes, I did play basketball, and yes, I do have a hard time finding pants long enough.
Now that we have that out of the way, let me say I am grateful to Tim Butler for offering me the opportunity to write a column for Gray Haven Magazine. I am a semi-regular poster on the Image Hawaiian Dick board. Apparently Tim really, really liked what I had to say or how I said it, because out of the blue I had a message in my inbox asking me if I'd like to be the "Fangirl Voice" for this esteemed site. After I realized he was serious, I agreed, but impressed upon him that my comics experience was rather limited. Limited to reading the old Harvey and Archie comics as a child and a brief flirtation with Spawn and Venom my senior year of college.
My only reason for being actively involved with comics at this time is due in part to my ex. The Other Party (that's how I refer to the aforementioned ex; herein known as T.O.P.) is heavily into comics and in an effort to share T.O.P.'s passion, I found a lovely comic called Hero Bear and the Kid by Mike Kunkel. From there my comic shop guy recommended Route 666 and I'm hooked on that now. I also loved the Rawhide Kid series, and was a bit peeved that the general public could not get beyond the fact that the Rawhide Kid was gay. The series was smartly written and full of inside barbs about the state of the world today. I also love the Ripley's Believe it or Not comics, Hawaiian Dick (I am the Queen of the Tiki Nation), and Ed Brubaker's Scene of the Crime. I have others that are growing, but these are some of my favorites. I'm not a big superhero fan, but I do love Plastic Man, for obvious reasons.
So, just exactly what am I going to write about in this esteemed magazine? Well, for the first month I will do a bi-weekly column, and then by August I should be churning out a column weekly. However, I hope to do something different every week.
Makulu Q&A: Yes, the tried and true Q&A. I hope to interview creators and artists of new or old comics, but I will also be doing interviews with political cartoonists. The first one will be with Ann Telnaes, who has done some wicked political cartoons and even won a Pulitzer.
FanGirl Focus: This column will usually tie in with any of the other columns. It may be a companion piece to the Q&A, such as a feature on how political cartoons are the ancestors to modern comic books, or it may be a review of any TV/DVD special that relates to the comics industry.
YesterYear: I'll choose a comic book of note either for it's art work or subject matter or nostalgic warm and fuzzy feelings it conjures up. We'll look at it, why it was popular, etc. The first comic I have planned to feature is the 1978 D.C. Treasury Edition of Superman Vs. Muhammad Ali, which has art work by the great Neal Adams.
PCH: Pop Culture Highway: This is what happens when popular culture and comic books collide. I'm very excited about the PCH column I have planned for August. And that's all I'm going to say.
So, I hope you will join me on this strange and wonderful ride that will be "Makulu's Musings." I was flattered when Tim approached me and I hope I can live up to his and my own expectations.

| :. ABOUT MELISSA |
Melissa came into the world kicking and screaming some 32 years ago on a May day in the sweltering South. Her early plans to become a doctor were derailed in the summer of her 12th year when she discovered movies and decided she wanted to become the next Barbara Walters. Following her dream she graduated with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and set out to make her fame and fortune. Strange as this may seem, fame and fortune did not come immediately. Or at all as of yet.
Making a permanent move to Los Angeles, Melissa soon learned what the term starving artist meant. She also learned that she was not made to starve and quickly entered the regular 9-5 job grind. About this time she began writing for a web site called www.tv-now.com where she still works today covering just about anything entertainment related.
Discovery of the Hawaiian Dick comic sent her snooping around the Hawaiian Dick board on the Image web site. From their she quickly became one of the comic's biggest fans, to the point of being named Tiki Queen of Hawaiian Dick. Other claims to fame include being runner-up on the special TV Trivia edition of The Weakest Link, and discussing female sexual dysfunction on the nationally syndicated Berman&Berman talk show on the Discovery Health Channel.
Melissa makes her home in lovely and scenic Sherman Oaks, CA with her two guinea pigs, Langly and Byers. Her current relationship status is "taken." In addition to writing for TV-Now.com and Gray Haven, she is the movie and DVD reviewer for SouthernIsland.com as well as any other freelance gig that comes along.
